Camp Frank D. Merrill is one of the smallest army bases in the country and in the Georgia area. It is home of the 5th Ranger Training Battalion and the mountain phase of the U.S. Army Ranger School. The base is responsible for training small unit leaders in combat techniques and in moving in any environment. Named after Frank Dow Merrill, an army general associated with the Burma Campaign of World War II, the camp accommodates less than 300 military personnel, though most housing options are off-camp.
